I finally got around to fixing the display on my Yamaha TG77:

This is one of those newer LCD displays. The fix also eliminates the tiresome high-pitched whine from the back light inverter circuit.

Where did you get that one? I replaced my TG-77 LCD backlight only (purchased from Telesis in california USA) and it looks great, but any time I can remove the inverter from a piece of gear I'm much happier.

I replaced the PPG LCD with a VFD and once I finish the overlay (blue tinted plastic cover) it'll be perfect. That PPG inverter had a very noticeable whine.

The LED display came from http://www.zinguy.com/lcdpage.htm

Instructions here:

http://www.xfactory-librarians.co.uk/Downloads/Yamaha_SY77_Display_Upgrade.pdf

This upgrade disconnects the inverter so the whine goes too!

Next up is the display in my Kurzweil K2000, which is now too dim to use.

Nice. I'm adding this to my list of projects.

I'd love to have nice bright display for my VZ-10m. I'll have to poke around and see if there's an LED version for it. But if you come across one, please let me know.

Nothing immediately obvious except that it's the same display as in the FZ-1 and I have heard of an LED replacement for that machine. However, nothing is showing up on google right now.

I've already installed an EL replacement. It's better than nothing but an LED would be great.

EL's are okay but thy will fail again in another couple of years. Plus there's the issue of that annoying whine from the inverter circuit. I also think that the price of the EL foil is high compared to the price of the LED-based display.

I've had a good look around at the LCD scene now and - I might be wrong on this - it seems that changing the display to an LED is easier where the designer used a display with an integrated controller chip as most new displays have the controller on board.

It would be handy if there was a database of replacement part numbers for various synths.
