Shaggie,

I went back through some old e-mails and found that the desktop and rack Zeits share revision numbers to the OS, but aren't interchangeable. If they were I'd send you a copy of my latest which is 01-26. So, yes, you are obviously several revisions behind. I think David just e-mails the new OS to people instead of posting it on the website now.

Ah good stuff here! I'll just wait for David to respond then yeah?
Thanks so much for taking a gander. I did find the midi sync under the System Quick Select Memory, as opposed to the MIDI one.

But, still no luck on a Syx RECEIVE setting anywhere... alas!

Thanks again, I had SO much fun my first night with the ZEIT...almost completed an entire track. Ta!

I think it's because Shaggie has 01-11.

So is 01-27 ready to go?

Hello all,

I'm the current owner of DS0006. It seems to have changed hands quite a bit.

So far I'm had great fun using the ZEIT to drive an Oberheim Xpander. I've mostly been in beta test mode with it, not so much in real composition mode yet.

I'd say that I tend to prefer hw sequencers over software. In the past, I've owned: 3 Notrons, an Octopus, 2 P3's, MAQ 16/3, many ARP sequencers, Roland 104, MC-4B and CSQ 600, MPC 60, 3000, and 5000, and probably others that I've forgotten about.

Currently, I've cut back to just 2 Notrons, an MPC-3000, and the ZEIT.

Not much else to say at the moment. I see a lot of familiar names from other hw sequencer lists. I guess we're all in the same boat -- looking for the proper man/machine fit. I can't describe exactly what makes a piece of hardware work for me, but I know it when I use it.

oh - the good news is that I finally bumped the OS up to the current version (it was at 01-17 or something), so at least that particular frustration with this ZEIT is over. Very Happy

Why did you ditch the Octopus?

Intead of writing a book in response, I'll try to summarize -- it was a waste of space and money to keep the Octopus for the little that it was used. It really should be the sequencing center of your studio and for me, I just didn't use it enough to justify keeping it for the few cool features I did use.

Things I loved -- the chord/strum editor, the direction editor, the ability to quickly chain sequences on a page or to run them in parallel, the fact it had 2 MIDI ins and 2 MIDI outs and it automatically picked up the incoming clock from either.

Things I didn't love - no display. I know that I'm typically opposed to menus, but the no display decision forced the designers into compromising some features because they didn't display easily using the LEDs. I also didn't love the acorn nuts as knobs for realtime control.

My favorite balance between programmability, realtime control, and depth of function is still the Notron. They came up with the core concept of creating a handful of simple functions, a (mostly) easy way to understand and program them, and the infrastructure to allow the functions to interact in weird and wonderful ways. It is easily the most organic MIDI sequencer I have ever used. The Oberheim Cyclone is also a cool and unusal device (mostly an arpeggiator, but it can do lots more).

The ZEIT falls (for me) more into the MAQ 16/3, ARP sequencer category - straightforward precision with very simple visual control over each step. The MPC 3000 is the "sometimes I just want to bang in notes from a keyboard" sequencer. So having one of each type gives me the flexibility to go with whatever I'm feeling at the moment. The Octopus sits somewhere between the ZEIT and Notron.

I've had many emails exchanges and a few transatlantic calls with the Octopus designer and have nothing but the highest respect for them and their product. To take something from a Photoshop image to shipping production in about a year is amazing. They listen to feedback from users and they work hard to drive the bug count to zero.

So, that's my 'summary'. Smile

The lack of the display on the Octopus is one thing that jumped out at me; I know I wouldn't like that either.

The knobs I hadn't thought of, but should have since I quickly changed the data knob on my Zeit to one that felt better.

I liked that MAQ could have one sequence modify another. I think that was the only thing I liked about the MAQ. Its numerous problems made me crazy.

I never got into the MPC way of programming. Nothing wrong with it, just not for me.

I saw Amanda's Notrons , but was more interested in playing with other stuff in her lair. I borrowed one of her P3 units for a couple weeks. I liked the features, but didn't like the drilling down in the menus all the time. Folks have said you get used to it and I'm sure I would have, but I got used to the Zeit much faster.

I'd be curious to know the demographics of Zeit customers. My first sequencers were the ones built into the SH-101 and the Casio VL-1. The first sequencer I really thought was great was the one in my friend's Moog modular.

My Boss Dr-110, with it's graphic grid display, is still what I look for in a sequencer. I'm wondering if Zeit customers tend to be 40 and above because of similar hardware experiences to mine or if there are younger people to who the Zeit appeals as well.
