Yes, it's pretty close.
Computers are wonderful tools and they make so many jobs so much easier but (and here's the evangelical bit) they're great so long as nothing gets in the way of the creative process. If you have to THINK then the instrument is WRONG.
I wrote ZEIT so I didn't have to think. I could just go with the flow.
Take, for instance, yesterday - setting up the NI Kore VST Softsynth on my Mac. It goes something like this. I'm sure you're all familiar with this procedure.
Navigate to the right page on the NI site. Download the DMG file from NI Site. Unpack it to the hard disc. Run the installer. Tell it where to put the files. Set up the MIDI interface. Run it. Got to run the license package first. License it. Where's the access code? Where's my NI account number? Where's the e-mail with the codes? Huh? Where's my account again? Software centre must upgrade itself? Wait? Wait... Software centre updates itself again. Wait... wait... Okay, enter codes. Right. product licensed. Launch product. eh? What does that mean? Where's my.... oh f*********ck this!
Take dogs for walk.
Results.
- No sequencers made
- No software written
- No music written
- Total Frustration
- Bad karma
Later...
Go back to Kore... fixed all of the above issues, Kore installed, got the MIDI interface working, got it making a sound... Yeah....
CRASH.
"The application Kore has unexpectedly quit."
WTF?
<Screams>
<Storms off in a hissy fit>
Goes up to studio, switches on Roland JD800, switches on ZEIT, presses play.
The Universe is a better place again. |
